No matter how accomplished, successful, or secure you feel, there is no security in working for someone else.
Last year, I had the honor of sitting on a panel at a women’s conference attended by many of Hollywood’s most successful female executives. The topics were: The Myth of Job Security & Starting Second Careers without Missing a Beat.
Here are some foundational ideas about the Myth of Job Security:
- At every level, in every industry, employment circumstances can change (relocation, downsizing, closing, restructuring, bankruptcy, etc). No job is immune or secure.
- Your excellent performance does not create job security (though it will help you in your next job search).
- Spending time in an unfulfilling career will burn you out and often force you to choose between your well-being and your job.
There is an alternative, one with the most security you can have. One you can (or in my view, you must) choose for yourself. It’s owning a passion-driven business.
Did you know:
- You can have a business that combines your passion and purpose for profit. You could actually love what you do, while making a contribution to what matters to you and making money.
- You can become self-sufficient and self-reliant doing something that brings you abundance, joy, meaning and security.
- You can have freedom, flexibility, and autonomy in your life and career.
Make sense? Here’s what else you must know:
- Technology has made being an entrepreneur cheaper and easier than ever. You can learn how to do anything you need done, or hire someone to do it.
- You have a “blind spot” and cannot see all of the skills, strengths and gifts that you possess and that others will pay for. And you can’t act on what you can’t see.
- Every passion can be connected to a viable business. A woman who wanted to be a dancer now finds work for dancers. A love for animals opens the door for you to enter a $53 billion industry with everything from training courses, dog fashions, collectibles & artwork, and high-quality foods flying off shelves. If you love to teach and inspire, nearly any career you’ve had can set the foundation for a coaching or consulting business.
Women from every background, skill-set, interest, and age are thriving in business online and offline. I know hundreds of successful women entrepreneurs, here are just a few:
- Rabab Koepp’s fondness for tables full of abundance and family grew from a counter in a deli into the neighborhood jewel, Rabab’s Neighborhood Bistro (in the middle of the recession).
- Valli Ware’s discontentment as a skin care rep for one of the biggest brands in the world, inspired her to create her own natural skincare line, Valli Naturals, and open her own salon.
- Teresa Britton’s desire to be at home with her family, coupled with her realization that she could do what others were doing better, led to the wildly successful MomsWhoSave.com.
- My desire to use every challenge for good created this blog, which led to a premium coaching practice, a publishing deal, a radio show, and countless speaking opportunities, and the creation of an online program for women.
- Your name and business could be here too!
Don’t let your dreams die. Know this:
- Your fears about starting your own business are more frightening than actually starting one.
- You don’t have to make drastic changes to begin to create real security for yourself. You don’t have to quit your job or put your children up for adoption. You can start small and slow.
- You don’t have to know everything before you start. The ways will appear as you move along.
- You don’t have to do it alone.
- The pain and cost of not expressing your gifts, talents, creativity and heart’s desires will only grow.
- If you don’t reach for your dreams, you’ll regret it.
- Starting your own business is about so much more than money and work. It’s a part of living a beautiful life.
Life is a collection of connected moments. The greatest life is one where most moments are personally meaningful. It’s not about the achievements, accolades, external validations, or appearances. It’s about giving your greatest contribution in service and reverence to your heart, and having the time and the emotional and financial freedom to have the experiences you want.
Your passion exists on purpose. Life hardwired you to want to do what you’re here to do. It’s time to stop resisting and say “yes” to your heart.
If all of this makes sense to you, but you’re clueless as to how to start, sit tight. My team and I are hard at work preparing for a short enrollment in my online program, the Beautiful Life School. We will show you how to launch or grow your ‘conscious-commerce’ business, and to nurture it into a thriving creation that supports your vision of success.
The Beautiful Life School is one part emotional healing/empowerment + one part sisterhood + one part conscious commerce instruction. We look forward to sharing this very special experience with you.
Love to you,
Cynthia
Oh Cynthia! I can’t wait that long! 😀 Ok, going to do lots of self-reflection, journaling, and figure out my heart’s desire. Sign me up. xo
Soooo super ready for this Cynthia.. Are there any tips… insights… or perhaps things we can get started on prior to the commencement of opening of The Beautiful Life School…
Peta! Yes, this is going to be wonderful. It alive inside of me, that’s how I know. I have that endless spring coming through with so many ideas and contributions, the discipline is in organizing it all. It’s amazing and it’s precisely what I want everyone in BLS to find. It feeds you and then feeds your life <3. For now, do what I suggested for Elisabeth below: start writing down everything, EVERYTHING, you like to do, have an interest in, or are good at–even little things (like baking cakes, folding napkins, walking dogs). Little things often open the way for bigger things. Love to you, sweet sister.
I can’t wait for this course I think my strongest assist is my
personality. I love to talk and my dream is to travel the world and work
in a creative space. But I don’t no what part of this vast industry
would be good for me, I just want to help people. Hopefully I will get
there. Cynthia I have no idea how I stumbled across your website but I truly believe God sent me to you since I have read your online book it has made my life feel worthwhile. I look at my vision board everyday and feel warm inside. I have ordered your book on Amazon and I can’t wait to read it. I just want to say thank you for teaching me to love myself and no that I am worthy.
Kliyah, Thank you for your kind words. You’re lovely. I’m grateful.
There are many ways to marry your passions. Keep your mind open and stay close. We will discover all you need <3
AND YES! YOU ARE WORTHY. IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN SO.
Hi, Cynthia, I want to learn more as I’m stuck in a dead-end job and it’s time for me to branch out. I feel I’m being called to teach and am currently seeking a license for Practioner of the Science of Mind, but I also love to write Bromance stories and am working on one now I hope to self-publish at the beginning of 2014. The story is flowing out of me like I’ve never had a story flow out of me before, fast and furious. I’m looking forward to learning more about your school. 😀
Janalyn
Janalyn! This is wonderful! You don’t have to choose between the two, but you may choose to focus on the one that’s flowing abundantly. Don’t get in the way! BLS will be perfect for you and your multi-faceted self. Don’t change a thing, Love, write some hot, sexy, goodness!
